TwoTorah scrolls, hidden through the years of Communist rule in Russia, were paraded through the Russian community of Brighton Beach to the Hebrew Alliance Friends of Refugees of Eastern Europe Synagogue on Sunday, Oct 24.

The newly restored Torahs were carried under a canopy, accompanied by music, dancing and banners. Borough President Marty Markowitz presented Rabbi Hershel Okunov, vice president of F.R.E.E, with a proclamation, declaring Oct. 24 "Friends of Refugees of Eastern Europe. Torah Ceremony Day in Brooklyn, USA."
The synagogue, America's largest religious organization devoted to aiding Russian Jews, is located at 2915 Brighton 6th St. For more information, contact the synagogue, at (718) 648-1820.
