There was a celebration in the streets of Brooklyn Sunday
as two Torah scrolls smuggled out of the former Soviet
Union were donated to a local synagogue.
Singing,
dancing and music accompanied the scrolls in a procession
through Brighton Beach. The two scrolls were kept hidden
during years of Communist rule and used for Sabbath services.
The families who smuggled them donated them to a synagogue.
The scrolls underwent a $10,000 restoration.
